name; Ilse Freidrich alignment; Angel age; 32 birthdate; February 17, 1967 zodiac; Aquarius occupation; archeologist, specializing in ancient Egypt languages; German, English, Arabic religion; Lutheran family; all deceased |
Ilse was born in West Berlin, although her parents had been living in the East; shortly after she was conceived, they tried to cross the Berlin Wall to live on the other side of the city. Her father died in the attempt, but her mother survived and returned to live with her own mother, dying of illness a couple years after Ilse's birth. Ilse was thus raised by her grandmother alone, her grandfather having been killed in World War II. She had a fairly uneventful childhood; her grandmother was strict and quite religious, but Ilse was quiet and compliant, so there were few arguments in the household. Ilse was a voracious reader, and somewhere amidst all of the books she read as a child, she began to develop an interest in the past in general and ancient Egypt in particular. By the time she was old enough to attend college, she had her heart set on studying archeology. Her grandmother died shortly after Ilse started college. Though she was left alone, she was near the top of her class, studying something she loved, heading for a career she'd been dreaming of for years. She was happy with where she was. And then she met Adrian Breton. He was one of her professors, as she'd decided to take a course or two in linguistics, just out of curiosity. He was intelligent, she looked up to him - and she was a bit surprised, and quite flattered, when he seemed to warm up to her quite fast. They got to know each other outside of academics, and friendship soon turned to love. Only things weren't quite that simple. Ilse thought things were going perfectly, until Adrian told her that he was a dreamseer, and she was a Dragon of Earth, fated to fight to bring about the end of humanity. After telling her, he left Berlin, leaving her alone. Again. Though she felt like she'd had the proverbial rug yanked out from under her feet, she pushed on with her life and earned her doctorate, and though it took her years to work past her initial refusal to believe, she eventually came to accept that like it or not, she had a destiny to follow. And so she arrived in Cairo a few years before the fated battle began, pursuing her career in archeology and waiting for the appointed day to arrive. |
Ilse, at her best, is intelligent, calm, with a slightly dry sense of humor; she stays polite unless severely pressed, rarely if ever swears, avoids stirring up trouble or going too far against the grain, and is generally the sort of mannerly, sociable lady her grandmother wanted her to be. Ilse, however, is not always at her best. She doesn't form specific emotional attachments easily - and yet she is too generally attached to the world at large and her own sense of morality to simply fulfill her duties as an Angel. She wants desperately to find the sense of detachment her comrades possess, but she hasn't been successful, and she's emotionally vulnerable, easily manipulated, and prone to breaking down. Humanity appalls her; she is disturbed by the way people can seem so good, and yet do such horrible things to each other. Her grandfather, according to her grandmother, was a loyal husband, a good father, and a wonderful family man, yet he was a Nazi. Adrian is charming, witty, and yet completely intended to manipulate her for the gain of the Seals before he actually fell in love with her. And Ilse always thought of herself as a decent person, and yet she assisted in causing the deaths of five million citizens of Cairo. Humanity appalls her, and she knows she is no better than anyone else. Somewhere deep inside, Ilse honestly hates herself for it. Additionally, her upbringing, combined with her destiny, has left her somewhat confused in her religious beliefs; she believes that God is responsible for setting her destiny as an Angel, and to go against it would be to damn herself - but following it threatens to push her over the edge. She's confused, lost, and yet feels she has no choice but to follow her destiny. Even if it tears her apart. |
Manipulation of time. It's easiest for Ilse to speed up or slow down normal timeflow, and if she's willing to put in the necessary concentration she can do so selectively, leaving some targets affected and others unaffected as she chooses - though this leaves her more open to interference than if she were indiscriminate. Freezing time takes more concentration, and she can't maintain it for long, but she can do so for a brief time while leaving herself and perhaps one or two others unaffected. Although it is possible for her to rewind time, she can do so only for a very short span, and it takes enough energy that it is of use only as a desperation tactic. |
in the wrong direction there's a few more bruises if that's the way you insist on heading |
